Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and we on The Denisonian staff are thinking about the things that we have to feel grateful for here on our little footprint on the Hill.
Though most of us might not want to make the trek up and down the hill from South Quad, this part of campus is home to a myriad of activities. More specifically, the Open House offers weekly events open to all students. Chai Time, every Wednesday 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., offers a mid-week break for students to enjoy conversation, chai and snacks. Chill Down The Hill, every Friday and Saturday from 8 p.m. to midnight, provides students with casual conversation, board games, snacks and a place to retreat from main campus life.
Not only that, but many of our fellow students commit many hours perfecting dance and theater performances and art pieces. If you ever find yourself complaining about having no plans, there’s bound to be an opportunity to appreciate what South Quad has to offer.
Keeping with the performance theme, some students are still shocked to see a group of Bluegrass musicians strumming their instruments in the Slayter pit. Every Wednesday, the group of musicians from the surrounding areas offer a change in some of the mainstream music we’re infiltrated with. They also offer a good opportunity to see what talent Licking County has to offer.
Student jobs on campus also often go overlooked. Several events sponsored by organizations are because of student workers’ input in these said jobs. The Center for Women and Gender Action, Center for Cross-Cultural Engagement, the University Programming Council, dining centers and service centers are just a few to name that play a role in many of the everyday interactions we as students make use of.
Another often overlooked and underappreciated person on campus is Cookie Sunkle. She just looks out for the students, sending numerous emails trying to help Denisonians with their future plans and campus endeavors. So often these emails are skimmed and skipped over, but students can benefit extremely from these emails and the information Cookie shares in her many emails.
If you’re looking for more engaging conversation, Sustained Dialogue is another campus organization that deserves more appreciation. The organization always manages to come up with creative and important issues to discuss. For example, their upcoming discussion, “Is Chivalry Oppressive?” on Nov. 10 at 7:30 p.m. in The Roost is sure to promote healthy and throught-provoking discussion.
On a smaller note, there are study rooms in Mitchell that many students don’t know about. We’re grateful that student-athletes have a place to work closer to their practice spaces.
Moving off campus there are the obvious restaurants and food options that are favorites of Denison students like Snapshots and Whit’s, however, Palumbo’s, the small Italian Market off River Road is a great stop for any Italian craving from tiramisu to great sandwiches. The family owned and operated spot serves the best local lasagna and Italian subs, always with a smile.
