SARAH WUELLNER, Asst. Sports Editor—Denison’s varsity football team is back on the field and ready to wipe out every team in the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III. After a crazy pandemic year in 2020, they now are ready to get back to playing the game that they love.
With a packed schedule of five home games and five away games, the football team is ready to take charge and give it their all.
On Saturday the 2021 North Coast Athletic Conference Opener and first home game for the football team occurred on Deeds Field-Piper Stadium. Denison beat Allegheny College 31-0, scoring in every quarter of the game to solidify their win.
This win adds to Denison’s victory streak of now 8 wins against the Allegheny Gators.
This game looked a lot different than the couple of games the team played during the COVID-19 era. As restrictions begin to lift, spectators from campus and off-campus are encouraged to attend the games as they are held outdoors making going maskless a safe option.
These new regulations brought in a large crowd of students and non-Denisonians to support and cheer on the team to their victory. As well as the club cheerleading team getting to chant on the sidelines as they did before the pandemic.
The game was an overwhelming success as the team went in knowing that they would play well with the drive to perfect hitting the players just as they had done in practices since mid-August leading up to the game.
Their strategy included running the ball quickly down the field and using a fast tempo to keep the team jumping from play to play. The varsity football team stood their ground on the home field to secure a victory against Allegheny College.
The next game is Saturday, September 18th at Oberlin College whom Denison has a 7 time winning streak against as well. The next home game is Saturday, September 25th against Wittenberg University.
