TARA SEFCHICK, Special to The Denisonian—
This past Wednesday and Thursday, Denison welcomed famous trumpeter, vocalist and public speaker, Byron Stripling. He gave students a motivational talk on how to take full control of their lives, and following, a riveting performance with his quartet and guest vocalist, Sydney McSweeney.
During his speech on Wednesday, Stripling discussed how to make one’s art their own. In order to truly become a master at what a person wants to do, one should practice every day. He states, “repetition is the mother of skill.” Even if you don’t know what your purpose is yet, Striping encourages students to keep looking for their art, for what excites them and to chase it once it’s found.
Stripling also preaches the practice of journaling, to document the time in your life. Daily reflection allows one to truly sort through their thoughts, trials and tribulations for the better. By learning what Stripling states as, “bleed when you write,” one is able to express truth on paper, so the ideas and difficulties one has faced won’t seem as daunting. Getting in the habit of journaling now allows one to create a blueprint for their future, and can be one’s own learning program to track progress.
Following the Wednesday speech and discussion, Stripling performed in the Eisner Center’s Sharon Martin Hall along with drummer, Jim Rupp, bassist, Andy Woodson and pianist/organist, Bobby Floyd. Alongside McSweeney, Stripling captivated the audience with his engaging and soulful character, giving everyone a glimpse into the astonishing world of jazz and gospel music.
If you missed the chance to see the inspiring, moving sounds of Jazz and Gospel, or want to see more live music at Denison, next week mezzo-soprano, Carolyn Redman and pianist, Hana Chu will present a faculty recital “Songs of Love and Sondheim” in Burke Recital Hall at 7 p.m. on Sep. 13. The Ohiolina Music Festival will also be taking place Sep. 16 through Sep. 18 at Granville’s Infirmary Mound Park. Denison’s own American Roots Ensemble will be performing as well as many other folk, country, and bluegrass musicians.
