As the anticipation for Denison’s World of Dance next Saturday continues, a new dance group joins the many different performance groups. “Dhadkhan,” which translates to “heartbeat” in Hindu, has existed informally for more than 2 years. Primarily specializing in Indian and Bollywood dances, as well as performing at Diwali and Holi festivals each year on campus, the group is ready to expand and become official.

“By the end of next year we will be officially registered, and in the meantime, we are practicing a range of different styles and just enjoying the team dynamic,” said Huliyar, “our practices are just plain fun!”

Dhadkhan’s type of dance is referred to as “Bollywood Fusion,” taking the elements of past dances while also “encompassing and welcoming different cultures.” The popularity of the group’s performances at Diwali and Holi last year prompted interest from many students within Dhadkhan to formally become a whole group.  Huliyar adds, “There’s a student from Brazil who wanted to do a Portuguese song, so we’re currently learning a dance for that.”

Dhadkhan is continuing to expand their repertoire and diversity as a group, and the increased collaborations between DISA and DASU organizations this year has allowed more room for representation and celebration for cultural diversity. Bhavana and the rest of Dhadkhan hope the Denison community knows that anyone can join, experience is not required, and niche dance styles are encouraged.

World of Dance is an event where all student dance groups come together to perform dancing styles ranging across oceans. It will take place on December 10th, and it is open to the public, so all who want to witness the soulmoving art of dance are more than welcome to join in on the experience.
