Between yoga, pilates, and spin classes, Hoaglin Center is filled with weekly exercise courses for students, but what is it like to actually teach students fitness?

Meghan Butte ‘27, is a data analytics and economics double major from Cleveland, who teaches a sculpt and spin class at the Hoaglin Center. Through her experience she was able to share insight on what these spin classes mean for her.

“I got into teaching fitness here because I was always into sports, being a three sport athlete,” Butte explains. “When I stopped doing high school sports, I wanted to do workout classes. I taught swimming lessons and so I’ve always been interested in the coaching atmosphere. Being a fitness instructor allowed me to connect with others and motivate them.”

Both sculpt and spin offer different benefits, Butte said.

“I enjoy teaching sculpt classes because of the creative aspects. You have to engage your whole body in movement. With spin classes, I typically implement a theme to the workout, largely because you can cater the workout to the song.”

Classes are typically smaller in size, usually five to 15 students.

“Teaching smaller classes has allowed me to get to know people on campus and form meaningful relationships,” Butte said. “There are regulars, but I also get the chance to meet new people with each class.”

While some classes feel like “biking through mud,” according to Butte, being able to attend these classes up the hill near the Mitchell Center presents a unique opportunity.

“People do not always want to go to Mitchell and work out. This allows for a smaller, more comfortable space for workout classes while fostering a good experience for all skill levels.” Butte said.

Admittedly, the idea of waking up the next morning with sore legs and a sore core might deter some, but for Butte, she says that working out is ingrained in her routine.

“Perceiving the workout as a non-negotiable makes a huge difference, giving me a clear headspace,” Butte said. “It is almost like a bubble bath for my mind.”
