Denison’s premier musical theatre ensemble, Singer’s Theatre Workshop, wowed a packed Swasey Chapel audience with its concert performance of “Les Miserables” on Saturday, April 27, showcasing the vocal talents of its members.
The cast, made up of veteran singers and actors of both Singer’s Theatre and Denison Theatre productions, was stacked with talent. Seniors Herb Porter (Jean Valjean), John Arnold (Javert), Vanessa Theus (Fantine) and Alec Lee (Marius) delivered powerful and proficient performances, demonstrating their years of hard work and training. Further talents rounding out the principal cast include Mary Libertini (Cosette), Danny Webb (Enjolras), Laura Wilson (Mme. Thenardier), Ian Shapiro (M. Thenardier) and Elena Johannson (Eponine).
Les Miserables boasts a large ensemble, and in its concert variations, employs choruses to provide backup in some of its larger numbers. In this production, members of Denison’s Concert Choir played this role, helping to filling the Chapel with sound during songs such as “One Day More,” the finale of Act 1.
The production was directed by Dr. Belinda Smith and conducted by Kevin Wines, who also directed Concert Choir this semester. A musical treat amidst a busy part of the semester, Singer’s Theatre Workshop’s “Les Miserables” is a production Denisonians won’t soon forget!
