Ashlyn Flaherty ‘17 dribbled down Deeds Field past the Praying Colonel defenders and reached the opponent’s goal. She rocketed the ball past the goalie into the upper left corner of the goal, and sent the Big Red into overtime.
As the second quarter came to a close, Flaherty’s goal let Denison go into overtime against fifth seed Centre College.
Both the Big Red and the Colonels found it difficult to score in the beginning of the game. Each team’s impressive defense made it difficult for the team’s offense to execute their shots.
After about 50 minutes of back and forth shooting, Denison finally took the lead 1-0 after Grace Murray ‘18 utilized the Colonel’s open net for a crisp shot in the goal.
In took Centre about 15 minutes to respond to this goal with their own shot to tie the game up 1-1. Seven minutes later, Centre scored again taking them ahead 2-1. Denison’s offense tried to respond with shots but nothing was falling. At the end of the quarter Flaherty forced a turnover and scored on the Colonels, tying the match up and sending the game into overtime at 2-2.
Just as the Big Red did to Centre, during overtime, Centre bounced back fast by attempting points on Denison’s net. Goalie Jenny Herold ‘18 was fast in the net and was able to deflect everything given to her. Although Herold was able to stop Centre’s shots, The Colonel’s goalie was able to do the same against the Big Red, which resulted in a 2-2 tie at the end of the game.
Center back player Drew Wentzel ‘18 was proud of how the team performed on Saturday.
“We played to our potential,” Wentzel said. “Centre is a very good team and we tend to play well when our opponents ask that of us.”
With a record of 2-3-2, The Big Red look to play John Carroll University tomorrow at home. The game begins at 6:30 p.m. During the 2015 season Denison beat John Carroll University 4-2 in their season opener.
