GIGI GEORGE, Arts & Life Editor

Ceramics, collaging, graphic design, stop motion—you name it, Sophie Tight, ‘23 has tried it. Tight is a sophomore from the San Francisco Bay Area whose introduction into the studio art world at Denison was a perfect accident. After not getting one of her preferred classes freshman year, she took Intro to Studio Art on a whim, her first art class ever, and quickly fell in love. Between making newspaper collages and sculpting with recycled wood, Sophie became enamored with the process of art making.

Although she is still searching for her style, Sophie’s art is, in many ways, reflective of her personality: authentic, bright and positive. Her pieces focus on light-hearted emotion, which she expresses through vibrant colors, curving lines and simple subjects, ultimately creating a sense of comfort. Sophie says that, as cheesy as it sounds, she likes to produce beautiful visuals that make people feel happy. Her stop motion piece “Fly” is a perfect example. The colorful scenes and dreamy music bring a child-like nostalgia in the endearing short-film she produced last year.

Sophie finds inspiration for her work in everything, but her roots play a big role in the final products—and it shows. The laidback, amiable culture of the West Coast is apparent throughout her colorful and wholesome art.

Similar to the pieces she creates, Sophie’s outlook on art is inspiring. Despite feeling like she entered the art scene later than everyone else, she’s excited to be majoring in something she truly loves—Studio Art. When she’s pulling all-nighters to finish pieces, or doubting her artistic decisions, Sophie likes to ask herself “do  I enjoy what I’m doing?” and the answer is always an enthusiastic “yes!”
