LIBERTY KINGSLEY, Asst. Managing Editor–
DCGA, Denison’s student government program, has been working on a multiplicity of projects to help improve student life on campus. Each member is a part of a committee within the organization, to help plan and carry out ideas for campus. This organization takes into consideration the voice of the students, and listens to their concerns and suggestions when it comes to improving the campus.
One issue currently being faced is the food availability (or lack thereof) in certain areas of campus, specifically in South Quad.
Noah Chartier ‘25 is a part of the dining committee in DCGA. This committee specifically has more students than adult members,
containing three adults and six students with diverse culinary needs: three omnivores, a vegetarian, an athlete, and an international student.
Chartier said that there’s currently about “one hundred students who live in South Quad”. These students, he explains, generally have to get breakfast on their own, or they have to walk all the way up the Hill in order to get food in the morning. It is time consuming, and forces these students to wake up earlier (especially if they have early morning classes).
In addition to many students living down in South Quad, the performing arts students have rehearsals that run for many hours. Chartier explains that making the walk up to get food is time consuming for these students, and by providing food options in South Quad, they save themselves the trip up the Hill, and it gives them more time to take breaks.
The dining committee wants to ensure that students who live down the Hill have the same opportunities as other students to eat substantial food without having to take double the time to walk to a dining hall.
As of now, the dining committee anticipates that there will be an area for food in South Quad by next fall at the latest, so long as there aren’t any unforeseen difficulties. This designated area is planned to be located within the Eisner Center; there will be food available with meal swipes.
For those interested who have suggestions to improve student life on campus, DCGA holds weekly senate meetings every Tuesday evening. These meetings are available for any student to be a part of, if they’d like to voice their concerns to the general public.
