The Delta Delta Delta sorority, better known to the Denison community as “Tri Delta,” held their philanthropy basketball tournament event “Dunkin’ Deltas” this past Saturday, March 5th.

Sixteen teams of 5-7 players each participated in the event. All who competed were asked to make a $20 donation to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Tri Delta’s philanthropy sponser and national partnership.

The Tri Delta philanthropy website page states that the mission of St. Jude is to “advance cures and means of prevention for pediatric catastrophic diseases through research and treatment.” Two Denison Tri Delta members stated that the cause is “one that endears many in the sorority.”

“St. Jude’s is really important to a lot of members,” said Ryan Darragh ‘24, director of PR/Marketing and member of the philanthropy committee. “I think it’s one of the reasons why people pledge themselves to Tri Delta.”

“St. Jude’s is Tri Delta national charity, so every chapter donates to St. Jude,” said Tri Delta president, Erin Anderson ‘23.

Upperclassmen may recall “Dunkin’ Deltas” from previous years. The annual event returned after a one-year COVID-19 hiatus.

“It’s been around for at least ten years [at Denison],” said Anderson. “There are also chapters at other schools that have done Dunkin’ Deltas themselves.”

All students were welcomed to form teams. After four rounds of single-elimination competition, the team 412 Nightriders came out champions. They defeated the team Pshers in a nail-biting finale, which featured numerous Denison basketball players on each team. The teams HipHipHooray and The Blue Ballers rounded out the tournament’s semifinalists.

The event brought over 100 students together for a fun, competitive afternoon. More importantly, Delta Delta Delta was able to use the incentives of the Basketball tournement and t-shirt sales to raise over $2,000 dollars for a great cause.
