One of Denison’s sororities, Delta Gamma, threw their annual Anchor Splash philanthropy event on Oct. 6. The Beta Zeta chapter of Delta Gamma began preparing for the event in the Spring semester of 2024. The main event is a dance battle between all of the sororities and fraternities in Denison’s Interfraternity Council and Panhellenic Council.

The performers consist of the most recent new member class of each organization.

Delta Gamma’s philanthropy is Service for Sight. The foundation has five schools across the country for people who are visually impaired. Denison’s chapter collects eyeglasses and donations for these schools. Delta Gamma also sold t-shirts leading up to the event as well as welcomed donations. They raised a grand total of $12,566 for charity.

“I feel like with philanthropic efforts, it makes our sorority closer, and it’s definitely a good bonding experience,” said Brooke Ulicny ‘26, Delta Gamma President.

Ulicny began to plan for Anchor Splash this past April. She had a whole team of people working. There was a director of Anchor Splash and a member who is in charge of the chapter’s philanthropic efforts. Additionally, there were three choreographers who created their dance routine.  The routine was choreographed by Gabrielle Hrivnak ‘27, Mary Hodgkins ‘27, and Lila Durdag ‘27.

“For one of our songs we had a few passionate people that really wanted to get in on choreography,” said Hrivnak.

“These girls are spending hours upon hours at the house each night. They all have busy schedules. It seems like a commitment and sometimes you don’t really want to go to these practices. But at the same time, it’s so rewarding,” said Ulicny.

Many of the Greek organizations put hours of work into practicing the dance routines.

“Dance isn’t something that everyone grew up doing, so it was a learning opportunity. Everyone was in the same boat,” said Maddie Luebkert ‘27. Luebkert is a member of Kappa Alpha Theta and participated in the event. “It’s been a really nice introduction for meeting everybody,” said Tyler Thompson ‘27.

“And we’ve been getting really close with doing the choreography. We’ve had smaller meetings and bigger meetings just to understand each other and how we work. And it’s nice because you have this one task to complete and you all are working together to complete this one task.”

Thompson is a member of Beta Theta Pi and also participated in Anchor Splash.

The morning of Anchor Splash started with some friendly competition during the field games.

These games included a water balloon toss, a sponge relay and tug of war.

After the games, was the dance competition, which was won by Delta Delta Delta. And the winners of the interfraternity council dance competition were Beta Theta Pi. The overall anchor splash winners were Pi Beta Phi, securing this title for the tenth year in a row.
