With many Denison students currently studying abroad, it is only a matter of time before next year’s applicants get their confirmation. Usually, sophomores begin the application process during their fall semester, and await their status throughout their spring semester.

The Center for Global Programs is looking through these applications and will give out acceptances to those traveling next Fall. Dr. Courtney Fowler, the Assistant Director of Global Programs gave some insight on what goes on in the Global Programs Center during their busy semester of flooding applications.

“As a liberal arts college, traveling abroad adds to the educational experience that you’re getting at
Denison, sort of adding that world-view global perspective… I think going abroad really shifts a lot of students’ perspectives of the world, on their home country, on themselves. We feel like that is an important part of that liberal arts experience,” Fowler said.

Dr. Fowler mostly deals with off-campus study advising by talking to students about the programs that are best fit with their academic, personal, and career interests. She also teaches the pre and post abroad courses called Beyond the Hill and Close to the Hill that students are able to take before and after their off-campus travels.

Fowler is currently promoting the global living community set to launch next year in Shaw Hall by setting up open houses, working with the global ambassadors and delivering the pamphlets seen in the academic buildings.

“There’s a lot of growth and exploration of independence as well as a broadening of a global perspective, something very fascinating to see out of students when they return.”

Adjusting to a new culture and environment may seem intimidating to those who aren’t used to
traveling abroad, but Denison provides guidance via multiple offices and programs that students are encouraged to reach out to.
